LNDC1125 Introduction to Arboriculture
This course is designed to give students a fundamental knowledge of the care of woody plants in the landscape. Topics include value and benefits of trees, proper planting, pruning, insect and disease identification, and commercial use of pesticides. The class will also discuss the American Nursery Standards Institute (ANSI) and Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) industry standards for woody plant material.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Discuss proper planting techniques
Perform spring planting of bare root woody plant material
Perform pruning on trees under 12 feet
Identify symptoms of serious pests in the landscape
Identify Integrated Pest Management (IPM) measures to control pest problems in the landscape
Identify proper soil conditions and remediation measures for woody plant material
Identify nutrient management for existing landscape woody plant material
Demonstrate knowledge of Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees (CODIT)
Demonstrate knowledge of species roles in compartmentalization
Identify structural issues versus health issues
Access American Nursery Standard Institute (ANSI) and Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) standards for woody plant material

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
