FRPT2260 Legal Aspects of Emergency Services
This course will address the federal, state, and local laws that regulate emergency services and include a review of national standards, regulations, and consensus standards.

FRPT1137 or instructor approval

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Define laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and codes, as they relate to emergency services
Analyze the sources of law
Apply federal, state, and local laws and liabilities applicable to emergency services
Define the purpose of national codes and standards
Discuss applicable court decisions that have influenced emergency services
Recognize the legal issues and concerns affecting emergency services
Analyze contracts, labor law and employment issues
Evaluate employee rights and discrimination including sexual harassment and hostile work environments
Explain the federal FMLA and Whistleblower statutes and how they apply to the fire service

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
