HIST1400 Contemporary World History

This course explores topics of modern history from World War II to present.  Topics covered will include the following: the Cold War, social and economic patterns, peace initiatives, global terrorism, neo-imperialism, and decolonization.  This course meets Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) goal areas 5 and 8.

Prerequisite

Qualifying score on writing assessment test OR ENGL0960 and Qualifying score on reading assessment test OR ENGL0921. Basic computer skills recommended.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the significance of major events, people, movements, and ideas in world history from 1945 to the early 21st century
Evaluate various perspectives on historical inquiry by engaging critically with both primary and secondary sources
Use historical evidence and methods when writing about history
Demonstrate historical thinking by examining historical context, change and continuity, contingency, and complexity
Analyze the diversity of people in their appropriate historical contexts
Compare and contrast major historical events, people, movements, and ideas of the last century with those of the present

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
