MUSC1010 Influence of Pop/Rock Music
This course explores the influence of popular music from its inception to the present: its musical processes and styles; and how recording technology has had an impact on accompanying social, political and cultural identities.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Demonstrate regular music participation and support through the experience of a listener and audience member
Articulate a critical perspective on the historical, socio-cultural, political and economic forces that have influenced the composition, performance, production, and consumption of popular music in the United States
Describe the musical characteristics of American popular music styles
Explain the influences of global cultures on the development of popular music in the United States
Demonstrate the basic vocabulary used to describe musical elements, such as timbre, rhythm, harmony, melody, and structure, in written and oral communication
Analyze the diversity represented in American and global popular music
Integrate primary and secondary sources to support an individual perspective on the role of popular music in American society

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.
