CELE2140 National Electrical Code III

This advanced course focuses on specialized NEC provisions relevant to second-year electrician students and emerging industry needs. Topics include special occupancies, special equipment, special conditions, motors, generators, transformers, HVAC equipment, communication systems, and NEC Chapter 9 tables and annexes. Students apply their foundational and intermediate NEC knowledge to analyze complex installations, interpret specialized rules, and perform advanced code calculations. NEC III prepares students for advanced fieldwork, troubleshooting, and licensure examinations.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Apply NEC requirements for special occupancies and conditions, including hazardous locations, health care facilities, and outdoor/temporary installations
Interpret and apply code rules for special equipment including HVAC systems, motors, generators, and transformers
Apply specialized NEC requirements to communication systems, signaling systems, and low-voltage installations
Use NEC Chapter 9 tables and annexes to perform advanced conduit fill, box fill, and conductor property calculations
Evaluate complex installation scenarios for compliance with specialized NEC chapters and industry best practices
Integrate requirements from multiple NEC chapters to solve advanced code problems involving services, feeders, equipment, and special conditions
Demonstrate professionalism and precision when documenting and defending code-based decisions

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
