ARTS2000 Elements of Design

This course is an overview of basic design processes through a historical perspective. Students will explore how the elements and principles of design have changed and evolved over time and place. Through the application of key design theories and theorists, this course illuminates the patterns and trends that designers draw upon in creating new work and illustrates the impact of design on modern life, commerce, and culture.

Qualifying score on reading assessment test OR ENGL0921 and Qualifying score on writing assessment test OR ENGL1021

Describe the early history of design
Contrast the design elements and principles of key historic periods

Evaluate the social construction of design
Explain Experimentalism and Anti-Design
Create designs using elements and principles of specific historical periods

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
