FRPT2121 Advanced Fire Investigation
This course is intended to provide the student with advanced technical knowledge on the rule of law, fire scene analysis, fire behavior, evidence collection and preservation, scene documentation, case preparation, and courtroom testimony.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the need for the use of the scientific method for investigations
Analyze the role of the fire investigator within the criminal and civil legal process
Explain the rule of law as it pertains to arrest, search, and seizure
Describe the nature and behavior of fire as it relates to fire dynamics
Analyze the causes of fires and contributing factors
Evaluate the use of incendiary devices, explosives, and bombs
List the procedures for fire scene documentation
Identify sources and technology available for fire investigations
Explain the role of the fire investigator in the trial process

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
