ELEC1400 Basic Troubleshooting

This course will allow students to troubleshoot larger circuits and systems. Students will utilize schematics, wiring diagrams, functional block diagrams, component placement diagrams, deductive reasoning and test equipment to determine faulty circuits and components. A practical troubleshooting exercise will be the final test.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Examine board level functional relationships of a given device
Investigate the front panel control operations of this device
Operate the device controls to display output waveforms on an oscilloscope
Identify the functional blocks for the different outputs of the device
Explain the operation of each functional block of the device
Conduct a signal flow analysis of the complete device
Examine the interactions between the functional blocks of the device
Troubleshoot a given device for real and simulated defects

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
