HLTH1030 U.S. Healthcare System
This course introduces the student to the complex healthcare system of the United States. An historical perspective will be presented with exploration of how healthcare in the U.S. has changed over the years. The present state of healthcare will be the focus and topics covered will be: Operations of a healthcare organization; government involvement in U.S. healthcare; the difference between inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care; healthcare careers; public health; healthcare payors, financing, and managed care; technology in healthcare; healthcare law and ethics; and mental health issues in America. Students will analyze how all of these areas affect the management of a healthcare organization.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Describe the history of healthcare in the U.S.
Identify characteristics of the current U.S. healthcare system
Explain current healthcare initiatives and related website resources
Describe the government role and public health role in healthcare
Differentiate the common healthcare settings and their characteristics: Outpatient, Inpatient, Long Term Care
Explain the different ways healthcare is financed by consumers in the U.S.
Describe the impact that technology has made on healthcare
Identify major healthcare laws and regulations
Discuss the concept of ethics and its application to healthcare organizations
Identify mental health issues related to the U.S. healthcare environment and society
Explain the characteristics of the wide variety of healthcare careers
Relate the topics of access to healthcare, health disparities, and social determinants of health to current healthcare issues in the U.S.

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
