MAST2022 Lab II

This course is designed to build upon the skills acquired in Lab I. Students will perform venipuncture, capillary puncture, and 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG). This course covers immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology. In alignment with American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Safety and Scope of Practice are thoroughly discussed. The students will perform waived testing according to the Clinical Laboratories Improvements Amendment guidelines.

MAST1020 and must be taken semester before MAST2041

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the medical assistant’s responsibility to the patient in terms of quality of care
Demonstrate competency in lab procedures
Identify blood chemistry laboratory equipment
Explore blood laboratory test
Exercise professionalism within the Scope of Practice of the Medical Assistant
Discovery the theory of electrocardiography
Practice competency in 3 methods of venipuncture
Demonstrate competency in capillary puncture method of blood collection
Demonstrate competency in performing electrocardiogram
Demostrate safety in a lab setting  
Apply Clinical Laboratories Improvements Amendment (CLIA) guidelines to practice in the lab setting
Utilize immunology in a lab setting  
Utilize hematology in a lab setting
Utilize clinical chemistry in a lab setting
Utilize microbiology in a lab setting

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
