SOCI2400 Juvenile Justice
This course examines the historical foundations, current philosophies, procedures and characteristics of the juvenile justice system. It will explore theories of delinquency, strategies for working with juveniles and Minnesota statutes that apply specifically to juveniles.

Learning Outcomes
The following goals will be addressed in the course.
Trace the development of the juvenile court system
Analyze police responses to juvenile offenders
Discuss strategies for diversion
Differentiate theories of delinquency
Describe pre-adjudication processes for juveniles
Evaluate community-based correctional options for juveniles
Assess juvenile correctional institutions
Contrast status offenses with other types of delinquency
Identify Minnesota statutes related to juvenile offenders

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
