CELE1040 National Electrical Code I

This course is an introduction to the National Electrical Code (NEC), as well as Minnesota State Board of Electricity laws, and how to use them. Knowledge of the NEC and state laws and rules for electricians is the foundation of a career in the electrical industry as all electrical installations must comply with both. The most current versions are used.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the purpose of the NEC, including its role in ensuring safety, and identify the structure and organization of the Code, such as chapters, articles, and sections
Locate specific requirements within the NEC by using indexes, tables, and appendices, and identify key code sections related to residential, commercial, and industrial installations.
Interpret common NEC articles (such as Article 110, 300, 400, 500) and apply the code language to practical electrical installation scenarios
Describe the key requirements for electrical wiring methods, including the proper installation of conductors, raceways, and cables, as outlined in the NEC
Perform basic electrical load calculations for residential installations, using NEC guidelines for determining the proper size of service and feeder conductors
Explain how the NEC is used during electrical inspections and the importance of code compliance for safety, insurance, and regulatory purposes

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
