CELE1060 Blueprint Reading

This course covers the plans, symbols, and specifications for construction and design of residential and commercial buildings. Residential and commercial service calculations are included. National Electrical Code (NEC) is included in all discussions.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Identify common symbols, abbreviations, and conventions used in electrical blueprints, including symbols for electrical devices, circuits, panels, and components.
Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and floor plans, identifying key electrical components and their relationships within the structure or system’
Differentiate between various types of blueprints, such as site plans, power distribution plans, lighting plans, and single-line diagrams, and understand how each applies to electrical installations
Interpret scale drawings, dimensions, and notations on blueprints, ensuring accurate placement and installation of electrical systems
Interpret panel schedules, understanding the distribution of electrical loads across circuits and identifying breaker sizes, circuit types, and amperage ratings
Explain how electrical systems outlined in blueprints meet relevant local codes, standards, and safety regulations, including proper spacing, wiring methods, and equipment placement

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
