EMSV2036 Work Integrated Learning – Primary Care

This course explores and applies the contemporary professional model of community paramedic in the health continuum. This course will focus on competencies that examine the professional responsibilities of community paramedics in multifaceted roles: therapeutic communication, empathy, attitude, confidentiality, and patient safety. The competencies will be experienced in non-emergency clinical and community focused environments, under the supervision of a medical director, physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Provide appropriate patient-centered care related to delivery location
Recognize limits of the Community Paramedic's (CP's) competence
Demonstrate competency in skill areas required for clinical interventions and referrals
Demonstrate competency needed to share public information related to EMS prevention programs
Explain the role of the CP in the community multi-disciplinary team
Demonstrate competency in providing/explaining appropriate prevention strategies and health promotion concepts
Complete a supervised practicum in primary care settings
Participate in the implementation and ongoing management of care plans with healthcare team
Deliver public health information through effective communication skills

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
