FACM1020 Facility Print Reading

This course is designed to provide the student with foundational knowledge and hands-on practice   reading prints in residential and commercial settings.  Students will be exposed to the essential skills needed to read and comprehend construction documents while analyzing foundation, structural, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and welding prints.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Perform basic arithmetic operations 
Identify common types of lines used on prints
Interpret the most common abbreviations and symbols used on prints
Analyze how symbols are used to show standard materials, parts, and assemblies
Interpret residential and commercial framing drawings
Evaluate residential and commercial construction drawings to determine detailed properties of the building’s foundation, structure, and finish  
Recognize and interpret symbols and abbreviations specific to building mechanical systems
Interpret mechanical drawings to determine specific requirements of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing components.  
Evaluate HVAC, electrical, and plumbing drawings to determine specific components required  
Interpret specifics about HVAC, electrical, and plumbing fixtures

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
