EMSV2060 Personal Safety and Wellness

This course focuses on the knowledge and skills community paramedics need to maintain personal safety, physical health, and emotional well-being while delivering care in non-traditional and community-based settings. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and mitigating safety risks during home visits and community encounters, including environmental hazards, occupational violence, infection exposure, and situational awareness. The course also addresses strategies for preventing injury, managing fatigue and stress, and supporting long-term resilience in the paramedic role. Through case studies, practical scenarios, and evidence-informed practices, learners will develop approaches to protect themselves, promote wellness, and sustain safe, effective practice across diverse community environments.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Identify common personal safety risks encountered in home-based and community care environments
Recognize environmental, behavioral, and situational warning signs that may threaten personal safety
Demonstrate situational awareness strategies during community and home visits
Apply personal safety techniques to reduce the risk of injury or violence during patient encounters
Implement infection prevention and exposure control practices in non-traditional care settings
Assess scene safety during community responses and determine appropriate actions to maintain personal security
Utilize communication and de-escalation techniques to manage challenging or potentially volatile situations
Explain the impact of fatigue, stress, and burnout on performance, safety, and patient care
Apply strategies to manage occupational stress and promote emotional resilience
Demonstrate techniques to reduce musculoskeletal injury during patient movement and daily work activities
Evaluate personal wellness habits related to sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and mental health
Develop a personal wellness plan to support long-term health and career sustainability
Access appropriate resources for mental health support, peer support, and professional assistance
Advocate for personal and organizational practices that promote safety and wellness in community paramedicine
Integrate personal safety and wellness principles into daily community paramedic practice

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
