MUBE1000 Introduction to Music Business and Entrepreneurship

This course provides a survey of entrepreneurial and business concepts related to the music industry. Topics will include principles of marketing, publishing, licensing, distribution, promotion, and music sales.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explore career paths that exist within the music industry
Analyze introductory music business principles
Identify non-traditional career opportunities and various ways to generate income
Analyze artist contracts
Analyze music licensing, distribution, and publishing
Analyze creative royalties and copyright law
Demonstrate the operations between record labels, independent artists, and managers
Analyze the ever-changing dynamics within the music industry
Create proposals for various artistic projects

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
