COMM1007 Communication for Success in the Workplace

This non-MnTC college-level human communication course is designed for technical careers.  Focus areas will include real-world application of skills and techniques of communication as they relate to verbal and nonverbal communication, time and stress management, cultural differences, ethics, relationships and accountability, conflict, and much more.  Students will identify personal communication goals as they relate to workplace and career success.

Basic computer skills and understanding of Internet strongly recommended for successful course completion

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Describe self-management techniques for effective communication
Identify time and stress management skills
Analyze the influence of nonverbal communication
Identify communication techniques for navigating cultural differences
Examine principles for making ethical communication choices
Investigate accountability in workplace relationships
Differentiate workplace communication and its channels
Define characteristics of an effective team
Discuss skills for resolving workplace conflict
Investigate communication challenges and changes in the workplace

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
