FRPT1126 Introduction to Fire Investigation

This course is intended to provide the student with the basic fundamentals and technical knowledge needed for proper fire scene interpretations, including recognizing origin and cause, preservation of evidence and documentation, scene security, motives of the fire setter, and types of fire causes.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Demonstrate the importance of documentation, evidence collection, and scene security process needed for successful resolution
Demonstrate the process of conducting fire origin and cause investigation
Identify the responsibilities of a firefighter when responding to the scene of a fire, including scene security and evidence preservation
Identify the professional development process for fire investigators
Describe the implications of constitutional amendments as they apply to fire investigations to include case law decisions that have affected fire investigations
Define the common terms used in fire investigations
Determine methods of heat transfer
Explain the basic elements of fire dynamics, construction, and fire protection systems as to how they affect origin and cause determination
Discuss the basic principles to identify the cause and origin of fires
Recognize potential health and safety hazards

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
