FRPT1156 Fire Protection Systems

This course examines design features and operation of fire protection systems. Topics will include portable extinguishers, fire alarm systems, fixed special agent systems, water supply and sprinkler systems.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the different types of fire protection systems found in various types of structures
Analyze the uses and benefits of fire protection systems found in various types of structures
Summarize the elements of public water supply systems as they relate to fire protections systems
Explain the operation for different types of portable fire protection systems
Identify the different types and components of fire suppression systems
Discuss residential and commercial sprinkler legislation
Compare the components in a fire alarm system
Describe the hazards of smoke
Discuss the factors that influence smoke and fire movement in a structure

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
