NURS1121 Medical Terminology

This course is designed to introduce the nursing student to medical terminology.  Students learn to construct words using medical roots, prefixes, and suffixes, as well as learn to pronounce and spell medical terminology.

Qualifying score on reading assessment test OR ENGL0921

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Define the components of medical terminology
Utilize medical terminology related to the body systems
Define the meanings of abbreviations used in healthcare
Illustrate an understanding of medical words used in proper context

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
