POLC2281 Defensive Tactics

This course provides students with the physical skills and academic knowledge to perform the basic functions of a law enforcement officer when tasked with physically controlling a suspect.  This course provides effective guidelines for the student to make defensive decisions in the field regarding the reasonable use of physical force and reinforces past and current case law related to peace officer’s use of force in cognitive areas where de-escalation may be needed.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Describe the use of elements of deadly force by peace officers
Apply escalation and de-escalation tactics for procedures in the use of force continuum
Employ proper tactics in dealing with suspects possessing weapons
Demonstrate weapon retention techniques
Practice procedures for confronting suspects and placing him/her under control or arrest
Apply different control techniques to individuals who are resisting
Demonstrate the use of verbal commands while applying techniques in handcuffing

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
