POLC2325 Capstone

This course allows Peace Officer and Public Safety students to demonstrate the relationship between the foundational knowledge they have gained in communication skills, critical thinking, multicultural understanding, leadership and Minnesota and tribal laws.  Students complete this course prior to entering the skills lab classes. Students will participate in a series of justice-centered dialogues with their classmates and complete an action-based research project in the community.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Analyze how factors such as race, cultural perspectives, socio-economic status and gender relate to their role as a peace officer when working alongside community members
Apply knowledge acquired from previous courses in the Peace Officer and Public Safety program to complete the action-based research project
Apply knowledge acquired from previous courses in the Peace Officer and Public Safety program to participate in justice-centered dialogue
Explain how the knowledge acquired from previous courses in the Peace Officer and Public Safety program will support the student as they continue into the psycho-motor skills coursework

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
