FRPT1260 Fire Behavior and Combustion

This course explores the theories and fundamentals of how and why fires start, spread, and are controlled. Provides an understanding of the basic principles of fire chemistry, the process of fire combustion, fire behavior, and examination of the effects of fire behavior on the safety of individual firefighters. The course also categorizes the components of fire and explains the physical and chemical properties of fire.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Identify physical properties of the three states of matter
Categorize the components of fire
Explain the physical and chemical properties of fire
Describe the process of burning
Define basic terms and concepts associated with the chemistry and dynamics of fire
Explain the effect and dangers of air movement on the combustion process
Discuss various materials and their relationship to fires as fuel
Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of water as a fire suppression agent
Articulate other suppression agents and strategies
Compare other methods and techniques of fire extinguishments

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
