FRPT1280 Hazardous Materials Chemistry
This course provides basic chemistry relating to the categories of hazardous materials including recognition, identification, reactivity, and health hazards encountered by emergency services.

Course Requirements and Evaluation

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Describe the common elements of the Periodic Table
Distinguish between elements, compounds, and mixtures
Explain the difference between ionic and covalent bonding
Define the basic chemistry involved with common hydrocarbon derivatives
Describe the basic chemical and physical properties of gases, liquids, and solids
Discuss the nine U.S. Department of Transportation hazard classes and their respective divisions
Demonstrate the utilization of guidebooks, Material Safety Data Sheets, and other reference materials to determine an initial course of action
Predict the hazards/reactivity of a chemical based on chemical family
Explain explosives, compressed gases, flammable materials, poisons, toxic materials, and radiation

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
