FRPT1270 Introduction to Fire Prevention
This course provides fundamental knowledge relating to the field of fire prevention. Topics include: history and philosophy of fire prevention, organization and operation of a fire prevention bureau, use and application of codes and standards, plans review, fire inspections, fire and life safety education, and fire investigation.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the role of fire prevention in accordance with the national fire problem
Describe fire prevention organizations and associations
Relate fire prevention governance to jurisdiction authority
Define laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and codes, as they relate to fire prevention
Define the functions of a fire prevention division
Describe inspection practices and procedures
Explain the standards for professional qualifications for personnel within the fire prevention division
Summarize opportunities in professional development for fire prevention personnel
Describe the historical development of fire prevention
Explain how code enforcement impacts life and property loss

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
