ITEC1145 Data Center 1

Data center technicians are skilled professionals who install, maintain, and monitor mission critical computer hardware and data center infrastructure equipment. This course introduces students to data center technologies and the skills needed to enter or advance a career in data center operations. Students will explore facility equipment, power delivery, cooling requirements, computer networking hardware, and cable standards.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Identify types of data centers
Describe the various roles and responsibilities of data center professionals
Identify power infrastructure components
Describe cooling infrastructure technologies and airflow management
Describe network infrastructure components
Define power and cooling requirements to meet customer requirements
Install equipment in cabinets and racks
Perform cable termination on copper and fiber media
Troubleshoot copper and fiber connections
Create and maintain documentation and logs
Monitor the data center availability and capacity
Implement safety and security practices

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
