LANG1115 Spanish for Health Careers (On Hold)

In this course, students will learn basic conversational Spanish as it relates to medical careers, proper pronunciation of medical terms in Spanish, and how to be culturally sensitive in interactions with Spanish-speaking patients.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain a series of events that took/take place in the past, present, and future in Spanish
Describe wide range of patient symptoms in Spanish
Explain medication prescriptions in Spanish
Discuss the socio-economic and cultural realities of local Latinos and the impact of those realities on the health of the community
Discuss the aspects of cultural sensitivity that relate to Latino patients
Assess levels of pain using Spanish
Conduct blood pressure checks using Spanish as the language of inquiry
Observe Spanish-speaking staff interact with Spanish-speaking patients at health clinic
Access data from the Internet regarding socio-economic realities of Minnesota's Latino population

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
