BUSN1000 Principles of Business
The course is an overview of the role of business in the American economy and the international community. The course will cover the free enterprise system used in America. The student will look at issues of business and society; as well as, legal, regulatory, and political responsibilities on the part of American business. A short overview of marketing will also be covered as a part of the course.

Qualifying score on reading assessment test OR
ENGL0921 and Recommended: Qualifying score on writing assessment test OR
ENGL0930

Describe the economic, competitive, political, technological, social, legal, and global environments of business
Define comparative and absolute advantage in global markets
Describe the steps to implementing a program of social responsibility
Compare and contrast advantages of sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations
List the advantages and disadvantages of small business ownership
Identify the key skills of effective business leaders and managers
Describe how purchasing, inventory control, and quality control affect production
Describe the major components of human resource management
Explain the elements of the marketing function
Explain the role of technology in managing the operations of a business

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
