BUSN1075 Business Conflict and Negotiation

This is a college level course in negotiating and managing conflict in business. The course covers the overall process of negotiation, from preparation through bargaining and agreement.  The focus of the course is negotiation to create value and building long-term relationships among negotiators and the organizations they represent.  The course will address conflict and dispute resolution techniques and tools, both informal and formal.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Describe forms of conflict commonly experienced in business relationships
Identify the conflict management and resolution process, including the positions parties typically take (avoidance, accommodation, competing, compromising, collaborating)
Define the negotiation process, including preparation, discussion, goal clarification, negotiating offers and counter-offers, agreement, and implementation 
Define the types of negotiation, including distributive negotiation, integrative negotiation, team negotiation, and multiparty negotiation
Describe the elements of persuasion
Demonstrate conflict/negotiation skills in common areas of business management, including labor relations, employee performance management, sales contracts, and more

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
