BUSN1140 Business Law
This course is an introduction to the principles of law as they apply to businesses. Topics covered include the court system, contracts, purchases and sales under the Uniform Commercial Code, commercial paper, employment law and business organizations and regulation.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Describe the functions of law in the business environment
Identify the critical role of law in supporting the successful execution of the organization’s strategic plan
Outline the structure of the court system in the United States
Defend the need to set up a system of uniform state laws
Describe the importance of ethics and corporate responsibility
Define common law, statutory law, constitutional law, and administrative law
Define torts
Explain elements of contracts, legal and illegal agreements, and consideration
Describe third party contract involvement
Define product liability and warranties
Describe rights and duties of parties to negotiable instruments
Describe rights and duties of principals/agents
Distinguish between real and personal property
Describe negligence, product liability
Describe common employment laws, including EEO compliance
Compare and contrast the varieties of negligence and assumption of risk

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
