BUSN1200 Business Communication

It is essential that business persons in any organization understand how that organization communicates. This course is designed to develop listening skills, nonverbal communication, the cultural dimensions of communication, and intercultural job skills. Today’s workers communicate more, not less, since information technology, mobile devices, and social media have become available in business.

Learning Outcomes

Define business communication in the modern organization
Describe how communication impacts personal and organizational success
Identify communication styles and when each is most effective
Explain when communication is framed in a technology-driven era
Apply the communication model to deliver important messages focused on listening, non-verbal communication, and ensuring the message is received the way it was intended
Describe interpersonal communication approaches utilized in conflict management, crisis management, and negotiation
Discuss how communication impacts culture, diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizations
Create messages in a digital format
Build business cases, reports, and proposals that earn credibility and trust in decision-making
Apply techniques to facilitate effective meetings and presentations
Describe effective public relations strategies

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
