Overview

The Automation Technologies certificate will expose students to the training, education, and skills to build a base knowledge of manufacturing processes and plant operations, generally for entry-level positions. Students can use the knowledge gained in this certificate to build upon a manufacturing career path leading to higher-level careers in Mechatronics/Automation and Robotics. Students will receive introductory training in industry practices for safety, manufacturing processes, maintenance, and quality control including lean principles, Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

This 30-credit certificate offers courses designed to start students on a career pathway in automation technologies, mechatronics and robotics. Building off the five courses in Production Technologies focusing on core skills, students build an advanced automation/mechatronics skill set with hands-on experience in: Industrial Electricity, Mechanical Systems, and Programmable Logic Controllers.  Along with the core knowledge provided by the Production Technology Certificate, students will gain skills that provide them with the abilities and knowledge to work in manufacturing.

Career Opportunities

According to Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development, manufacturers are projected to have over 1,600 jobs available in automation, mechatronics, and industrial machine repair over the next ten years. These careers pay above the statewide median wage.
