Course Requirements and Evaluation

Refer to Course Syllabus for detailed information regarding the requirements and evaluation standards for this course. The Course Syllabus will be distributed the first week of the course.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the principles of electric motor operation
Identify different types of electric motors commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications, including AC (Alternating Current) motors, DC (Direct Current) motors, single-phase, and three-phase motors
Understand motor components and their functions
Interpret the information found on motor nameplates, including voltage, amperage, horsepower, RPM, service factor, and other important specifications, to ensure correct installation and operation.
Use the appropriate motor for a given application, considering factors such as load requirements, voltage, horsepower, speed, and environmental conditions.
Demonstrate the ability to wire and connect electric motors in both single-phase and three-phase configurations
Demonstrate different methods of starting and stopping motors
Apply motor protection devices
Demonstrate basic troubleshooting techniques for electric motors
Identify key NEC regulations related to motor installation, grounding, protection, and wiring
Demonstrate safe use of tools and equipment for installing, wiring, and troubleshooting motors
