CELE2060 Commercial Wiring I

This course introduces the student to the materials and design aspects of commercial wiring and reinforces residential wiring skills by wiring a new house. Topics included are installation of transformers, raceways, services, non-metallic cable, boxes, wiring devices, fixtures, residential code requirements and design requirements for conduit layouts, circuit protection, and display lighting.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Explain the key components of a commercial electrical system
Identify common wiring materials and tools used in commercial wiring installations
Identify electrical symbols for commercial locations and buildings
Demonstrate knowledge of electrical services, feeders, and branch circuits and feeders in commercial settings
Demonstrate the ability to install and terminate electrical conductors  
Demonstrate the ability to perform box and conduit fill calculations
Demonstrate the ability to perform basic electrical load calculations for commercial buildings
Design and install circuit protection systems
Demonstrate the ability to design and install emergency and exit lighting systems that meet NEC and local building codes
Identify different types of commercial lights and lighting controls
Install different types of commercial lights and lighting controls
Demonstrate knowledge of electrical safety protocols specific to commercial wiring projects

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
