NURS2110 Psychosocial Nursing (On Hold)

This theory course expands the students understanding of adaptive and maladaptive human behavior. The student develops an understanding of mental health and illness which include mental disorders, chemical abuse and domestic violence. Discussions will include theory related to appropriate cultural nursing interventions and psychotropic medication therapy.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Integrate concepts of mental health verses mental illness
Explain the role of the nurse in contributing to the recovery of the person with mental illness
Analyze the components of a psychiatric assessment using therapeutic communication skills
Discriminate therapeutic modalities for treatment of mental illness
Compile psychopharmacologic agents using taxonomy based on psychiatric disorders
Apply psychotherapeutic nursing interventions for anxiety, affective, and psychotic disorders
Reframe understanding of addictive disorders including substance abuse and alcoholism

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.
