EMSV1235 EMS Skills - "On Hold" - August 2020
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) skills focuses on the Basic and Advanced Life Support skills. These include: patient assessment, airway control with adjuncts, IV therapy, suctioning, communication skills, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) intubation, medication administration and other invasive techniques. The students may use high fidelity simulation throughout the course to assist them in mastering these skills.

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Establish a secure airway
Maintain a secure airway
Demonstrate the need for oxygenation and ventilation
Discuss health principles relevant to infectious/communicable disease
Safely access the venous circulation
Integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression
Implement a management plan for the patient with infectious and communicable disease
Perform manual airway maneuvers
Determine need and type of adjunctive therapy required
Perform complete airway obstruction maneuvers
Perform advanced airway management
Demonstrate the techniques for assessing the airway
Demonstrate techniques in assessment and physical exam
Perform a focused history and physical exam of the medical patient
Demonstrate patient care skills
Demonstrate preparation and administration of medications
Demonstrate cardiac management and monitoring skills

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
