METS1505 Principles and Practices of Lean Manufacturing (Lean Tools and Techniques) (On Hold)

This course encompasses review and discussion of the major principles and practices of Lean manufacturing. Partial listing of Lean tools covered include: Visual Management, 5S, Problem Solving, Material Management, Kanban, Mistake Proofing, Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, as well as other. There will also be discussion on the high level (overarching) principles and philosophies of Lean Manufacturing and Lean Enterprise.  

This course utilizes a Lean Simulation tool to enhance the learning experience by demonstrating the actual use of Lean principles and tools in a simulated manufacturing environment. The simulation tool compares and contrasts traditional manufacturing with Lean to show subsequent results improvement. There will also be discussion on Lean program planning and implementation.

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
