Marriage and Family is the sociological study of the relationship of family life and society. This course will introduce the student to historical family perspectives, cross-cultural family perspectives, gender role expectations of the family, gender stratification within families, and societal norms and expectations of the institutions of marriage and family.
Prerequisite
Qualifying score on reading assessment test OR
ENGL0921 and Qualifying score on writing assessment test OR
ENGL1021 or
ENGL1026. Basic computer skills recommended

Identify key concepts of marriage and family
Compare and contrast current family structures
Differentiate theories within marriage and family
Compare and contrast historical family structures
Identify socialization expectations of family members
Identify consequences of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse within families
Compare and contrast historical and present day gender roles
Identify social causes attributed to family status
Differentiate social research methods used to study marriage and family

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.
