NURS1161 Nursing Skills I (On Hold)
The Nursing Skills I course builds a foundation of skills and knowledge for the practical nurse. Topics covered will include the head to toe data collection, airway management, sterile technique, pain management and genitourinary procedures. This course will cover the characteristics of hazardous wastes and its safe handling, storage, and disposal.

Admission into the practical nursing program

Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Demonstrate accurate head to toe assessment
Acquire a framework for the nursing process within the scope of the practical nurse
Apply nursing interventions to deviations in health from baseline
Facilitate respiratory assistive techniques
Perform procedures using sterile technique
Integrate principles of pain management
Demonstrate professional behavior using therapeutic communication techniques

Course Scheduling
The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
