METS1525 Quality System/Lean Program Development (On Hold)

This course encompasses review and discussion of the components of a Quality System or Lean program components and implementation steps, resources, timelines, etc.  The focus will be on the development of an actual Quality System or Lean program implementation plan.  This class is an independent workshop with the participants working individually or in small groups to create and document a plan for actual implementation of a Lean or Quality System.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Identify and explain the factors and benefits that would compel an organization to undertake a Lean Enterprise journey.
Describe some of the barriers to change and how to overcome them.
Describe organizational and operational issues needed to support Lean Enterprise implementation.
Explain the basic steps needed to change organizational culture. Identify critical components of Lean program planning and implementation. 
Describe the major drivers and their application used to implement Lean Enterprise. Apply the principles and philosophies of Lean Manufacturing and Lean Enterprise.
Describe the key steps in implementing a Lean transformation.
Identify and explain the application of key performance measures for Lean Enterprise implementation. Determine the appropriate tool for tracking and reporting (reviews) on project progress. 
Describe the components of a Lean project plan.

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this syllabus for the credit breakdown.
