METS1010 Metrology and Measurement Techniques (On Hold)

This course prepares the student to inspect components and/or assemblies to determine acceptance status. Topics covered include reading and interpreting engineering and assembly drawings; application and use of basic inspection and measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, ring gauges, and scales; and proper documentation of non-conformances.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Interpret engineering component drawings
Interpret product assembly drawings
Select proper measurement device(s) for a given application
Use basic measurement devices correctly
Calculate discrepancies between documentation and actual measurements.
Determine acceptance status of the item being evaluated
Document acceptance status in a manner compliant with medical device industry regulations
Utilize scales for verification of quantities.
Identify calibration requirements for basic measurement devices
Demonstrate ability to maintain measurement devices in working condition
Conduct gauge Reliability and Repeatability (R&R) studies

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
