This course explores the influence of hip-hop music from its inception to the present; its musical processes and styles; as well as accompanying social, political, and cultural identities.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Develop habits of music participation and support through the experience of a listener and audience member
Identify the cultural, political, and artistic value of hip-hop
Identify the components of a music culture
Identify the cultural impacts of hip-hop in the United States and around the world
Develop the skills of critically listening to hip-hop music
Write critically about hip-hop music and its influences
Analyze the nuances of mainstream hip-hop, conscious rap and underground hip-hop
Analyze the diversity represented in global hip-hop cultures
Explain the influences of global cultures on the development of hip-hop

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
