This course is designed to introduce students to American Sign Language and the Culture of Deaf People in the United States.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Use sign language to communicate
Decode sign language
Explain the rules of American Sign Language grammar
Explain the variety of signed English systems
Identify ways to communicate with a person who is hard of hearing
Integrate manual markers with sign execution to convey meaning
Analyze the differences in how deaf and hard of hearing people identify themselves
Explain behavioral norms and accepted social interaction within the Deaf community
Contrast American hearing society's cultural values with the cultural values of the Deaf community
Manipulate technology used by deaf consumers

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
