PHRM1010 Pharmacy Law and Ethics

This course will provide the student with the Federal and State laws as they pertain to pharmacy. The ethics content of this course will address the principles of ethical thought as applied within the area of pharmacy practice. It will assist in preparing the student for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Outline the history of pharmaceutical legislation
Explain OBRA (Ombudsman Reconciliation Act) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
Explain the current legislative changes which affect pharmacy practice
Interpret the regulations regarding pharmacy technicians
Demonstrate effective communication between a patient and a pharmacy technician
Describe the pharmaceutical ethical code
Apply ethical concepts to pharmacy situations

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the Credit Details section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
