LRTT1000 Rail Maintenance Fundamentals

This course introduces students to light rail vehicle (LRV) systems, operation and signals systems. Safety in and around trains and the vehicle right-of-way (ROW) is emphasized. This course forms the foundation from which students will build their career as light rail technicians.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Define rail terminology and acronyms
Demonstrate knowledge of OSHA standards appropriate to an industrial setting
Demonstrate ROW safety procedures
Interpret Safety Data Sheets for chemical hazards
Demonstrate knowledge of the dangers associated with overhead catenary systems (OCS)
Identify OCS components
Identify light rail track components
Describe LRV systems

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this syllabus for the credit breakdown.
