LRTT1055 LRV Systems IV

This is the fourth course in a series covering the theory and operation of Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) systems. The course covers systems from both mechanical and electrical perspectives. Systems covered include doors, monitoring and diagnostics (MDL). This course provides the student a more detailed look at Trainlines; explaining how control is maintained throughout multiple vehicles via electrical coupling. Theory and troubleshooting techniques are taught using LRV manufacturer supplied manuals and electrical schematics.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Relate normal and emergency door operation to passenger safety
Examine mechanical door operation and system components
Explain door power and control circuits
Summarize good maintenance practices for door systems
Compare ladder diagram for door control to electrical schematics and vendor manuals
Explain the role of the Door Control Unit (DCU)
Explain the role of the Safety Loop or Interlock
Produce fault logs downloaded from DCUs
Enumerate maintenance functions of the Train Operator Display (TOD)
Demonstrate knowledge of TOD for Real Time Data Gathering (RTDG)
Examine the Event Recorder System (ERS) function
Describe troubleshooting for trainlines and their functions
Compare the different types of electrical schematics and their uses

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this syllabus for the credit breakdown.
