LRTT1050 Communications and Networking Fundamentals

In this course, the student is introduced to networking fundamentals as applied to Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) and Light Rail Signals systems. Network systems and topologies commonly found within light rail systems are defined and compared. Power quality, grounding and their effects on network reliability are also studied. In the lab, the student practices cable selection, termination and troubleshooting. Examples are obtained from LRV and Light Rail Signals communication systems.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Examine networking common to LRVs, Signals and Communication systems
Delineate cable and connector types for LVRs, Signals and Communication system networks
Select cable types for specific applications and criteria
Demonstrate proper cable termination techniques
Describe power quality and grounding issues
Demonstrate steps taken to resolve power quality and grounding issues
Apply termination inspection criteria
Demonstrate troubleshooting methods for network cabling
Discuss LRV command and control communication networks
Discuss passenger information communication networks
Discuss Train to Wayside Communication (TWC)

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this syllabus for the credit breakdown.
